Yes, I keep rats as pets. No, I don't find them ranging around dumpsters or living in sewers. These rats are domesticated - they're meant to be pets.
Unlike other small animals *cough*hamster*cough*, a rat that bites is NOT the norm, and is typically caused by pain or hormones, rather than an evil streak.
Rats are very clean - they're always grooming themselves, like cats, and will even groom their humans. Apparenty, we're very dirty animals!
